FEI climbs down on Bute issue

The FEI has had to climb-down over the controversial relaxation of its policy on certain anti-inflammatories. Member federations have been asked whether they would agree to delay implementation until “at least” the next general assembly in November next year, following an earlier announcement it would be suspended until April.
Princess Haya, president of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), has done about turn by asking national federations to agree to "time out" on the issue. She wants the issue of allowing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in horse sport to be debated at the 2010 General Assembly.
David Holmes out as heads roll at FEI

David Holmes has left the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) abruptly "by mutual agreement" on Thursday 3rd December 2009. He had been executive director of sport at the governing body of horse sport for just 19 months.
"I'm shocked, this has come totally out of the blue this afternoon. It's a resource issue principally — I was told it is for financial reasons, I suppose it's the cost of the clean sport programme."
FEI delays implementation of new prohibited substances list

The FEI has announced today (1 December) that the FEI Bureau has passed a Resolution delaying implementation of the new Equine Prohibited Substances List and the accompanying Equine Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Regulations until 5 April 2010. This Resolution has been passed in order to allow for broader debate and consultation on the policy change approved at the recent FEI General Assembly regarding the restricted use of a small number of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Big 3 rejoin as President of FIP resigns

Argentina, America and the United Kingdom, the "Big 3" federations of polo rejoined the Federation of International Polo. The political stand-off which occured in the last few months ended with the resignation of FIP President Patrick Guerrand Hermes. It was a negotiated settlement which saw the President stepping down but allowed to address the FIP delegates which had come to Buenos Aires for what was to be the FIP General Assembly on Monday 23rd November. Instead, the General Assembly did not happen as all three Group A countries had resigned.

Vets demand FEI reopens 'bute debate'

Senior vets from around the world have written to FEI president Princess Haya condemning the decision to allow medication in competition horses. As part of its so-called "clean sport programme" the FEI decided last week to allow six substances — many of which are painkilling — to be used during competition. Before that, the FEI has always had a "zero tolerance" policy on drugs in sport, and the about-turn caused outrage.
