Qabil celebrates Dexter's return in style
Saturday, July 12th, 2008
Qabil Ambak celebrated the arrival of his favourite Dressage horse, Dexter in style, by winning the Class 22 Advance 5.1 Dressage title at the 3Q Classic in Kuang, Selangor yesterday.
Qabil who clinched the Dressage individual and team gold at the Korat SEA Games with Dexter, displayed the same grace and poise today to collect 65.79 points and edge Marianne Rehn of Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club (BKEC) who had 62.37.
According to Qabil, after the SEA Games in Korat last December, Dexter returned to Anaheim in Holland where Qabil’s training base is situated.
Qabil who will be competing in Showjumping events over the next two days, also welcomed his favourite horse Parvina that was undergoing treatment for an eye infection, is still in the hunt for a place in the FEI World Cup to be held in Las Vegas next April.
He is tied for fourth place with brother Quzier on nine points and trails Sweden’s Helena Gabrielson who has 18 points after winning the first two qualifier series held during the Premier Cup Series in Putrajaya last month. The four-day 3Q Classic which is also the third series of the FEI World Cup SEA Qualifier, sees participation from 200 horses and 150 riders from all over the world.
Meanwhile, up and coming rider Franchesca Liauw showed that she is determined to wipe out her disappointment of missing the Young Rider title in showjumping last year by winning the Da Macai International Big Tour against a strong field of seasoned riders.
Earlier she had shown her mettle in Dressage by winning her third title today in Class 19, Preliminary Dressage Test 1.3 after having won yesterday’s Class 15 Preliminary Dressage Test 1.1 and Class 16 Novice Dressage Test 2.1.
Franchesca, a 15-year-old rider from Singapore, lost out to Japan’s Misono Hattori in the race for the SEA Young Riders Series last year, but since Misono is not competing this year, she believes the title was within her means.
“Last year, I was leading the Series but faltered at the final two rounds and Misono emerged winner. This year I hope to be on the winner’s podium,” said Franchesca whose mother is an American while her father, a businessman, is a Singaporean.
“My ultimate goal is to ride in a FEI World Cup final but I know it is still a long way to go. But I am working very hard towards that aim. I also hope to represent Singapore in the SEA Games and Asian Games.”
