STARTING RIDING IN KUALA LUMPUR
By Caroline Roberts

Horse riding is a wonderful hobby and way of life for many people, you can learn to ride at any age and gain a huge amount of enjoyment from the challenge of learning in a school and then the satisfaction of riding out in the wonderful countryside of Malaysia.

Have you have recently arrived in Kuala Lumpur and want to know where you can go horse riding? Or are you already a KL resident and want to take up a new activity? Perhaps your son or daughter has been pestering you as they want to learn to horse ride but you didn't know where to look?

Perhaps you are concerned that horse riding is a vastly expensive hobby to pursue and that you will need expensive equipment to participate or you think your child will soon lose interest? NOT!

Whether any of the above applies to you or not we hope the following article will help you with your quest for information about horse riding in KL.

So perhaps you have booked your first lesson, well done! Now you will need to know what to wear in order to be comfortable while perched atop your mount. You will need to wear enclosed shoes/boots with a heel (trainers are not recommended as they have no heel) and we would suggest you wear cotton trousers or perhaps jogging pants. If you can borrow a pair of mini chaps it might also help. A helmet is mandatory. Some riding establishments loan them for your first few lessons, but it is advisable to buy your own.

It is quite likely that your legs will feel a little tender after your first lesson but this will soon disappear as you get used to it and it will be well worth it in the end.

We would advise you that it is not generally possible to learn to horse ride overnight! You must be prepared to stick at it for a while in order to learn the basics. No riding establishment should tell you that you will be able to do certain things after a certain number of lessons. Riding is very individualistic and each person takes a different length of time to master the basics. However, if you are patient and learn to ride well you will have many years of enjoyment horse riding in Malaysia or anywhere the world.

Horse riding needn't break your bank account and Malaysia is one of the cheapest places in the world to learn to ride. Please learn to ride at a reputable riding centre with qualified professionals. There are also quite a number of riding schools that we feel we can recommend. They are tabled below.

We feel sure that once you start to learn you will be hooked very soon. Horse riding can be very satisfying and rewarding as well as a good distraction from the pressures of work or home.
